Our
Golden family started back in 1994, when Mom and Dad decided to add a
puppy to the family. They already had two small children, but knew a
Golden would be the perfect addition to an already perfect family.
One day, Mom saw an ad in the local paper for a senior
Golden in need of a new home. She showed the ad to Dad (How do you like
that for a rhyme?)
They couldn't believe their eyes...Why would anyone want to give up an
old Golden they wondered, and called the number to find out why. Certainly
there must be a good reason. Perhaps my owner died, perhaps this,
perhaps that. They never did find out why I was looking for a new home,
and the people who rescued me didn't even know themselves. It is sad
really, how many loving Goldens like myself find themselves looking for
a new family
They decided to meet with me, even though they really
wanted a puppy. It was love at first sight for all of us. I knew the
minute I saw them
that they would be the family for me, so I told Kathy of the
Golden Retriever Rescue club that they would be fine, and to draw up
the papers. I explained to Kathy, that older dogs are much better for
very young children, and she explained this to my new family. They weren't
too sure at first, but I told Kathy all the right things to say, and
they understood that this was best for all of us.
We weren't home for five minutes when Bryan and Allison,
both just toddlers, decided to run across the room and jump on me. BA-Boom
they yelled, as
they landed straight across my middle. Mom and Dad flew across the
room to pull the kids off and see if I was ok, but before they could
get there, I just smiled and turned to the kids panting. I told Mom
and Dad not to worry, they were my kids now, and I would take really
good care of them.
I took the kids everywhere with me, and even talked
Mom and Dad into getting a motor home so we could travel together. We
went
to Disney World
every year and stayed in the nicest campsites. The sites were so great,
I chose to stay behind, while the rest of the family went into the park.
One day I decided to play a joke on the family when they tried to get
me to keep a tree from running away. Just as they connected my leash
to the tree, I ran as fast as I could and jumped in a lake for a swim.
It was so fun, but they got really scared, so I came back. The motor
home finally smelled the way a motor home should smell...the fine aroma
of
dirty lake. Nothing like it:)
I stayed with my new family until September 24th,
2000, when I decided it was time for them to move on. I could tell that
the seizures I had
developed lately scared them, and they thought I was hurting myself.
It was a tough decision for all of us, but now my soul had a new mission.
Two puppies really needed help, and it was my job to make sure they found
my family.
